Added parking area, subject to site and rules

Concrete driveway widening and extensions

Adding concrete beside an existing driveway may look straightforward, but available yard space is only one part of the decision. Driveway-width rules, landscaped area, curb access and the condition of the existing driveway may also matter.

01

Verify what is permitted

Driveway and curb rules vary by municipality and property. Width, landscaped area and changes to street access may be regulated, so the specific address and current municipal information should be checked before construction is scheduled. A neighbour’s layout is not proof of approval.

02

Examine the existing edge

An extension joins concrete of a different age. If the original edge has settled or the driveway is already deteriorating, the new strip may create a clean line beside a surface likely to need replacement. Colour and weathering will also differ.

03

Keep drainage working

Widening replaces permeable or landscaped area with hard surface and changes where rain lands. The extension should not create a channel toward the garage, house or neighbouring property.

04

Curb, sidewalk and use

Added slab width does not automatically authorize wider curb access. The planned parking movement, public sidewalk and available entrance should be considered as separate constraints.
