Before an old driveway is replaced, it helps to understand why it looks the way it does. Low areas can point to drainage problems. Uneven panels may indicate settlement. The garage floor and road connection also determine how much room there is to establish the new elevations.

Start with the existing driveway
Crack patterns, panels that have moved and puddles that remain after rain are useful evidence. A slab that has dropped at the garage is a different problem from shallow surface scaling. Looking at those conditions before demolition helps identify what the replacement needs to correct.
The garage, public sidewalk and curb are fixed reference points in many driveway projects. If the old surface has very little fall between them, copying its shape may reproduce the same low spot.
Removing the old driveway
Existing concrete is separated into manageable pieces, removed from the property and sent to an appropriate facility. Access affects the method: an open driveway can accept different equipment than a narrow section beside a porch or retaining wall.
Once the concrete is gone, the supporting material can be assessed. Soft areas, mixed fill or material disturbed by previous utility work may only become visible at this stage. There is no sensible universal excavation depth; the required work depends on what is found and on the proposed driveway.
Preparing for the new slab
The base has to provide even support. Loose or inconsistent material can allow one part of the slab to move differently from another, so unsuitable areas are corrected and the base is placed and compacted for the conditions. Forms then establish the edges, surface profile and transitions.
Before placement, the driveway layout should also account for downspouts, adjacent lawns, porch steps and any narrow passage between the driveway and house.
Where will rainwater go?
A driveway may have only a modest elevation difference between the garage and sidewalk. The intended route for water needs to be established before forms are finalized, since a decorative finish cannot correct a low point built into the slab.
Water should not be directed into the garage or held against the foundation. At the street end, the surface also needs a workable meeting point with the sidewalk, curb or road. Adjacent grades and local drainage conditions determine what is possible; the answer is not always to increase slope in one direction.
Garage, street and sidewalk transitions
At the garage, a settled old slab can make the threshold appear taller than it was originally. The new elevation must be considered against the garage floor and door operation while maintaining a route for runoff.
At the other end, public sidewalk panels or curb access may control the elevation and width. These connections are assessed independently because changing the garage transition cannot automatically change municipal infrastructure at the street.
Joints, finishes and cracking
Control joints create planned locations for shrinkage movement as concrete hardens. They reduce random cracking risk but cannot make an exterior slab crack-proof. Joint layout must also work with the shape of the driveway, inside corners and wider sections.
Broom finish is direct and practical. Exposed aggregate reveals surface stone for a more textured appearance. Stamped concrete introduces pattern and colour but has different sealing and maintenance considerations. The finish decision comes after the driveway layout and drainage are workable.
Partial replacement and widening
Replacing one stable, clearly separated panel can make sense when adjoining concrete still performs well. It is less convincing when several sections have moved, drainage crosses the proposed joint or the remaining surface is already deteriorating. New and old concrete should also be expected to differ in colour.
A wider driveway can add useful parking area, but property width alone does not establish what is permitted. Municipal rules may address driveway width, landscaped area and curb access. Those requirements should be verified for the specific address before the addition is treated as buildable.

Can a concrete driveway be guaranteed not to crack?
No responsible installer can promise crack-free exterior concrete. Base support, joints, drainage, concrete placement and curing all affect performance, while ground movement and weather remain real conditions.
Can only the sunken section be replaced?
Sometimes. The decision depends on how sections are separated, where water needs to travel, and whether the concrete left in place is stable enough to create a sensible connection.
